AMERICAN HISTORY IS NOT PRETTY
While there is a lot to celebrate about our country, we are also guilty of many atrocities (as are most countries). It is the responsibility of schools to teach a complete and nuanced history of our country — and not just the aspects we can celebrate.
And discomfort is a good thing! Being uncomfortable with our history of limiting the rights and hopes of certain people groups pushes us to create a better future for all.
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayana
RACE IS A PART OF OUR SOCIAL FABRIC, WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT
We have made many great strides towards racial equity, but we are far from true equality — and race shapes our lived experiences in a myriad of ways. We can not teach American History without race because race has shaped American History.
